Dr. Noeleen Heyzer: Freedom from Want, Freedom from Fear

The first speaker at U@live is an NUS ALUMNI, Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, the ninth Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). Dr. Heyzer has extensive experience on issues related to women, gender, and development. Under her leadership, UNIFEM played a vital role in helping countries to formulate and implement legislation and policies to ensure women's security and rights. At UNIFEM, she focused on promoting women's leadership in conflict resolution, ending violence against women, and combating HIV/AIDS from a gender perspective.In 2007 Dr. Heyzer was appointed as the ninth Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). Since taking office, Dr. Heyzer has positioned ESCAP, the regional arm of the United Nations, as a powerful comprehensive platform for promoting regional co-operation among member states to achieve inclusive and sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific.Dr. Heyzer has a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science from the University of Singapore and currently resides in Bangkok, Thailand.
She talks about issues pertaining to women's rights in a talk titled 'Freedom from Want, Freedom from Fear' and beyond!
